Previous FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to US legislators and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's attorney submitted the response acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer stated he would try to have the proceedings terminated for multiple causes including that his client, a critic of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

The former director was formally accused just days after the former president pushed his attorney general to move forward against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald told the judge they intended to file several petitions to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly designated to assume control of the case.

The former director's proceedings was first handled by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his probe into an additional opponent - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the legal venue on mid-week, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.

After listening to the court state his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was questioned if he understood the accusations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he stated to the court.

Previous Events

The former director was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, he was leading an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, Mr Comey sparked a negative reaction from liberal politicians when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Hillary Clinton were not pursued, causing disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government claim Mr Comey lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he deceived the legislative body by stating he had not authorized a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to media organizations details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "wrongfully trying to sway, block and impede" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he said he was not guilty and alleged the former president of conducting himself like a "autocrat".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against the former director surfaced after Donald Trump posted on social media insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, charge the former director and other people.
