Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
