The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
