Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
